If you had told me 6 months ago that, at the age of 53, I would be hiking the Sequoia Bayview Trail in Oakland - standing at 5'7 and weighing in at 267 pounds - I would not have believed you. Nevertheless, I did it yesterday!

When my husband and I were younger, we had dreamed of moving to Oakland, as we were both passionate about the great outdoors and wanted to be near hiking trails we could visit on weekends.

Unfortunately, my obesity got in the way of our plans.

Having given birth to 4 wonderful children, I found myself 15 pounds heavier with each one. I felt exhausted and, truthfully, unattractive. Looking in the mirror, I was not pleased with my reflection.

I guess the fact that I love delicious food didn't help. However, when you reach 53 years of age, good food isn't necessarily a priority.

My grandchildren didn't invite me to play with them because they were aware that I couldn't keep up with them, thus lessening the fun. My friends refrained from asking me to come to restaurants due to the fact that I couldn't walk 20 steps without becoming out of breath. My husband had to go hiking by himself as it would be difficult for him to constantly help me back home.

I saw it in his gaze; he still loved me, but not in the same way as before. I was not the person he had initially fallen in love with, and I could understand why that was.

Everything was different one day.

As I sat beside a woman I had never met before, I noticed that she was half my size and my age. To my surprise, she handed me a handkerchief and said something that would alter the course of my life.

She stated that she had gone through the same struggles with her weight that I had, yet everything changed when she found a "simple Mediterranean Ritual," as she referred to it.

It's unbelievable that I was able to lose inches despite eating whatever I wanted, all thanks to one small adjustment to my morning coffee routine.

I can't believe how much time I used to spend on ineffective diets, but now my life is so much better!

I'm now really enjoying spending time outdoors, and when I opt to stay home, it's only so I can spend quality time with my amazing husband, who thinks I'm stunning.
